Area Calculator

Quickly compute the area of any 2D shape

1. Select Shape
2. Enter Dimensions
Formula:
A = a²

An Area Calculator is a mathematical tool used to calculate the amount of surface enclosed by a two-dimensional shape. It is useful for home improvement, construction, landscaping, flooring, painting, real estate, engineering, education, and everyday measurements.

The calculator can determine the area of common shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, trapezoids, and parallelograms. Depending on the tool, users can enter measurements in units such as inches, feet, meters, centimeters, or yards and convert the result into different area units.

How Area Is Calculated

The calculation depends on the shape being measured.

Rectangle

Area = Length × Width

For example, if a room is 20 feet long and 12 feet wide:

20 × 12 = 240 square feet

The area is 240 ft².

Square

Area = Side × Side

For a square with a side length of 10 meters:

10 × 10 = 100 m²

Triangle

Area = ½ × Base × Height

For a triangle with a base of 12 feet and a height of 8 feet:

½ × 12 × 8 = 48 ft²

Circle

Area = π × Radius²

If a circle has a radius of 5 meters:

π × 5² ≈ 78.54 m²

Why Use an Area Calculator?

An Area Calculator makes it easier to determine how much space a particular shape covers without performing complicated calculations manually. It can help estimate the amount of flooring, carpet, paint, grass seed, tiles, or other materials needed for a project.

For irregular spaces, the area can often be calculated by dividing the space into smaller, simpler shapes, calculating each area separately, and then adding the results together.

Example: If a garden consists of two rectangular sections measuring 10 × 8 feet and 6 × 5 feet:

Area = (10 × 8) + (6 × 5)
= 80 + 30
= 110 ft²

The total garden area is 110 square feet.
